Success is the icing on the cake for Grangemouth’s crafty sisters

Cupcake gurus Dawn McFadden and Jemma McCulloch

There can’t be many businesses that started with a cake shaped like a slipper.

But for sisters Dawn McFadden and Jemma McCulloch, the novelty cake was the start of a new business venture.

Dawn (28) said: “Our grand-dad was in hospital and we decided to make him a slipper cake for his birthday.

“Next thing we were getting requests from friends and family for other designs and then orders from people who had seen our cakes. It just grew arms and legs really.”

The sisters opened their first shop last summer. But when the chance of bigger premises with room for a workshop and kitchen came up, they took it.

Love @ First Bite opened in Dundas Street, Grangemouth, last year, allowing them to start decorating workshops.

Dawn continued: “I have a three-year old, Grace, and was conscious there isn’t much for little ones to do, so I was keen we do kids’ workshops. They were popular straight away and then adults started asking if we could do classes for them too.”

Love @First Bite now hold cupcake decorating classes for all ages and abilities, teaching the older participants how to make fondant roses, teddy bears and perfect icing while the little ones create simpler designs.

Jemma (24), a hospital theatre practitioner, said working with her sister is ideal as she provides the business brain while Dawn is the creative mind.

“We work really well together and, because we are sisters, we can be honest in a way you maybe wouldn’t be with a business partner. Although Dawn is the more creative one and I’m more business-minded, we make all the decisions together. I actually just switched to a part-time position so I can be at the shop more. Setting up the business was a big risk but with cake orders and the classes it’s turned out to be one that’s paid off.”
