Falkirk mum Mary has an idea that will take a load off your mind

Struggling with a laundry basket gave Mary Campbell a brainwave.

The mum of two has suffered from back pain for years and found doing household tasks like hanging up washing a real struggle.

Mary, from Falkirk, said: “One day I was trying to balance the washing basket and open the door without hurting my back and I thought there must be a product that makes this easier.

“I spent hours looking for a hands-free basket but found nothing so I decided to make one myself that distributed the weight of the load and meant my hands were free to open doors or carry out tasks.

“From that, Packapouch was born.”

After making the prototype, Mary received positive comments and decided to research the market.

She found there was a genuine need for the product and now, 18 months after initially developing the idea, Packapouch is on sale.

The large functional bag is worn to the front, with straps across the wearer’s back to distribute the weight evenly.

Available in a variety of fabrics and all produced in the UK, the product has been a big hit with those suffering back pain as well as wheelchair users and mums who need both their hands as well as the ability to carry lots of items at once.

Since starting the Packapouch website in the summer, Mary has received orders from around the UK and the USA.

Before starting her business, Mary was a stay-at-home-mum, busy looking after children Patrick (9) and Catherine (7), both pupils at St Francis Primary School.

Mary added: “It’s been challenging at times juggling being a mum with running the business but I am enjoying the challenge.

“Before having my son I worked in manufacturing, so the process wasn’t as daunting as it might have been, but there was still a big element of risk.

“I’m really happy with the product and the feedback from people who have bought it has been really positive.

“Packapouch is secure, comfortable and spacious. It’s been a really helpful product for me, I use it all the time, so it’s great to hear that others find it invaluable too.”

Mary will be at Shopmobility, Level 4, Callendar Square, Falkirk, on Thursday, November 29, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. to demonstrate the product.
