Catwalk gets cream at VOWS awards
A Falkirk family firm wowed the judges at the VOW awards.
Catwalk owner Pauline Spiers was delighted when she picked up a top accolade at the wedding industry ‘Oscars’.
Eight years after she set up the business, her Princes Street store was named best in the Mums’ and Bridesmaids’ Designer/Retailer category of the prestigious awards which were handed out in Glasgow on Monday evening.
She was the only local winner.
Four other businesses from the area were shortlisted for the VOWS (Voted Outstanding Wedding Supplier). These recognise examples of excellent customer service in the industry across Scotland.
Catwalk made the final last year, just missing out. However, 12 months later the business is a trophy winner.
Pauline said: “It was absolutely amazing. We were all holding our breath when the announcement was being made but it was still a shock when we heard Catwalk being called out. It was very exciting.
“I think what makes it so special is that it is customers who nominate us. That means a lot and we’re thrilled to have been chosen as top in our category.”
Pauline opened her shop after deciding there was a gap in the market for ladies’ fashions, but never expected the mother-of-the-bride side of the business to take off to the extent it has.
She added: “When I was younger I remember my mum used to shop in Dorothy Brookes, Klaze and Cathy Forsyth but these shops have all closed down.
“It all seemed to be high street retailers and I thought there was a market there. However, I didn’t expect to go down the road of wedding outfits. That side of the business just took off.
“Three years ago, I got the chance to open the Catwalk Designer Outlet round the corner, then last year opened Stepping Out, next to the original shop, which sells shoes, bags and designer jackets.”
Pauline said the award was a team effort, thanking sister Louise Brown, full time staff Margaret Miller and Fionna Downie plus her six other employees.
Also nominated in this years VOWS were Olivia Cameron Bridal of Laurieston in the Best Bridal Designer and Retailer category; Irene’s Florist of Falkirk and Stenhousemuir in the Florist category; Glenbervie House Hotel, Larbert, in Scotland’s best Wedding venue; and Kiltpin of Falkirk in Groomswear.
