Bus builder Alexander Dennis was named Scottish Company of the Year at the inaugural Scottish Corporate Awards.

The Camelon-based firm made it a business ‘double’ by also winning the Private Company of the Year category.

The prestigious awards, launched by Business Insider in association with Barclays Bank, are the successor to the Scotland plc awards and celebrate the achievements of listed companies and Scotland’s most successful private firms.

The University of Strathclyde Business School carried out research for the awards ahead of the gala presentation evening in Glasgow’s Radisson Blu Hotel attended by 450 senior executives representing Scotland’s largest and best performing companies.

The judging panel said ADL’s performance was even more impressive given the nature of the bus building industry and the highly competitive market the company operates in. One member of the judging panel said: “ADL is simply a great Scottish manufacturing story which has gone global.”

Chief executive Colin Robertson accepted the awards on behalf of the company’s 2400-strong workforce which includes over 700 at its main assembly plant at Glasgow Road. He said: “We are delighted and flattered. It’s a great honour to be recognised by our peers and an indication others have watched and saluted the progress we have made rebuilding the company over the last 10 years. None of this could have been achieved without the skills, dedication and hard work of our workforce who have shown repeatedly that for them adversity really means opportunity.”

Ally Scott of Barclays Corporate Banking said: “Scotland is home to a wealth of inspiring businesses that are leading the way. Their impact on the marketplace both in the UK and globally cannot be underestimated.”
