Butchers in a prime position for 60th

Gearing up for a busy festive period is butchers business Malcolm Allan, helped by its new state-of-the-art premises in Larbert.

The family firm is creating 20 new jobs and forecasting a 50 per cent rise in production thanks to the move which comes as it prepares to mark its 60th anniversary in 2014.

A £2.9 million finance deal with Bank of Scotland has allowed the company, currently run by brothers Gordon and James Allan, and their sons, Ross and Stewart, to move out of the outdated Tamfourhill premises and relocate to Central Business Park.

Using the latest food manufacturing equipment, Malcolm Allan will see an overall 55 per cent rise in sales during the festive season, including its popular festive steak pies.

Gordon Allan said: “It was particularly important to make the move prior to the festive season so we can utilise the extra capacity to deliver the 100 per cent uplift we see on some lines during the festive period.”

The firm has also recently been confirmed as Scotland’s number one food brand.

Now it is looking to consolidate its position, as well as introducing the brand to a wider UK market.

Last year, it sold 10 million Lorne sausages – enough to feed the population of Scotland with a couple of rolls and sausage each.

Another top seller is its steak pie, selling enough in a year in Asda’s Scottish stores to feed two million people – and if the pies were piled on top of each other they would measure 24 times the height of Ben Nevis.

Gordon Robinson, Bank of Scotland relationship manager, said: “Malcolm Allan is a hallmark of Scotland’s ever-bouyant food and drink sector and we welcome the company’s plans to target UK growth in the coming year.”
