Youngsters have been warned to take greater care when walking home from school after a boy and a girl were knocked down in a busy Laurieston street in the space of 24 hours.
The primary pupils were struck by cars in separate incidents as they tried to cross Mary Street. Neither was seriously injured.
While the drivers involved were not at fault, several parents in the area have spoken to The Falkirk Herald over their long-standing concerns about the road, which is close to both Graeme High and Laurieston Primary schools, and the pedestrian crossing where both incidents took place.
Claire Wilson, whose son Steven (11) broke his wrist on June 24 after being struck by a car, said: “The lights are temperamental. A lot of people have said that you have to press the button several times before the ‘wait’ sign appears. There was a lollipop lady there until 2010, and I think it would be sensible if one were brought back.”
“But Steven didn’t press the light before he crossed the road - he knows better.”
Another parent said: “That crossing is an accident waiting to happen. The road is always busy with traffic, and when the schools are out it’s crowded with kids.”
But one driver said that older children walking towards Laurieston from Graeme High would regularly step on to the road.
“I pass through Bog Road and have actually had kids walking down from school walk in front of my car, forcing me to stop. I have had to get out and tell them how idiotic what they are doing is.
“When they walk out in front of you and laugh in your face it’s really astonishing. I see it happening on a regular basis.”
A lollipop patrol was based at the pelican crossing until 2010.
A spokesman for Falkirk Council said that the lollipop patrol at Mary Street had been in place for some years before the installation of the current pelican crossing. “National guidance is that councils should normally avoid having signals and a patrol at one site,” he said. “Therefore, when an opportunity occurred, the school crossing patroller was moved to a vacant site at Boyd Street with effect from October 2010. This was in line with council’s normal practice.”
