LITTLE Indiana and Emma are both 2008 babies, yet when it comes to their names they are 'polls' apart.
Indiana shares her name with just one other tot, while Emma is one of 401.

The Register General recently published its list of baby names for 2008.
Topping the poll for girls' names in Falkirk is Emma, while the most popular for choice for boys is Jack – also the nation's favourite.

Indiana Hughes, who gets called Indie for short, was born on February 1, and lives with mum Sarahjayne (27) dad Jamie (26) and older sister Mia (5) in Brightons.

Sarahjayne said: "I thought Indiana was a bit more unusual and something that would stand out."

Emma McLelland, from Falkirk, arrived on May 6, and was a second daughter for Gillian (33) and dad Jim (38), who already have two-year-old Amie.

Gillian chose the name because it was one both she and Jim really liked, and she thought it went well with their surname.

It may have been the most popular girl's name in Falkirk – chosen 26 times – but Emma was well down the Scottish list, which was headed by Sophie, the choice for 632 wee ones this year. It filled second spot in the local charts.

Among the boys, Jack was the name given to 692 tots throughout the country and 26 in Falkirk.

Lewis took second sport in both the national and local lists.

While only two Indianas were born in Scotland this year, there were a whole host of unusual monikers.

For girls, these included, Princess, Disney, Miracle, Gypsy and Ocean, and, for boys, Diesel, Maxx-Cody, Red, Tin and King.

Duncan Macniven, Register General for Scotland, said: "As always the list of Scotland's favourite baby names is very interesting.

''Around 28,100 boys and 27,200 girls names have been registered.
Almost 7000 different names were chosen this year and around 1800 boys and 2600 girls were given unique names for 2008.

"There is a change at the top for boys, Jack replacing Lewis, and one new entrant to the top 20 – Aaron. Jayden, Max and Lucas are new entrants in the top 50.

"For girls, Sophie is top for a fourth year and Emily climbs five places to second place. Ava and Hannah join the top 10 and there are three new entrants in the top 20 – Leah, Freya and Holly."
