A DINNER dance raised more than £8000 for a cancer centre.

The event, at the Leapark Hotel in Grangemouth, was organised by Billy McAlpine, whose son was treated for cancer at the Beatson in Glasgow.

Billy, who organised the event along with friends Jim Hendry and former Falkirk footballer Stuart Kennedy, said: "I wanted to raise money as a thank you for the way they treated both Craig, and us as a family, when he was ill.

"Craig was 18 when he was diagnosed in February 2002.

"It was a really traumatic experience. He had an operation to remove the tumour before he underwent chemotherapy.

"He's now been given the all- clear, and has annual check ups."

An auction of football memorabilia as well as raffles on the night added to the total collected.

The dinner, which raised £8100, was so successful Billy hopes it will become an annual event.

Billy added: "I'd like to say a huge thank you to everyone who donated raffle prizes, and to everyone who came along and support the night."

Today's Vote

Do you think the NHS is equipped to serve us for another 60 years?
Yes - we will have a free health service throughout this century and beyond.
No - the NHS will crumble in half that time and we'll soon have to pay for health care like the Americans
