ROADS bosses claim a new speed camera system on a nightmare stretch could prove a boon to drivers.
For months commuters and other road users have faced lengthy delays on the A80 dual carriageway between Haggs and Mollinsburn as the road is upgraded to motorway standard.
The new speed detection system was switched on on Monday. Fourteen cameras now monitor the road.
But although the cameras, sometimes nicknamed 'yellow vultures', are unpopular with drivers, experts claim that, as well as being vital to road safety, they should improve traffic flow.
The camera system calculates a driver's speed between different points so motorists cannot simply slow down before a camera to avoid being caught. Research has shown that the cameras do encourage drivers to cut their speed.
