Maddiston school almost there

PUPILS in Maddiston should move into their new school today (Thursday).
It should have opened its doors in January, but a blaze in November devastated a large part of the building.
Builders Graham Construction handed over the keys last week. But pupils didn't start until today to allow teachers to prepare for their arrival.
The £9 million school has a number of eco-friendly features - including an unusual sedum grass roof which will act as a natural water retainer and reduce the risk of flooding.
All timber used is 100 per cent sustainably certified, and the walls are insulated with recycled newspaper.
Even play areas have recycled rubber mats.
Alex Waddell, convener of Falkirk Council's education committee, said: "The staff and pupils have been eagerly looking forward to getting into their brand new school.
"The building has many features which will improve the internal environment and reduce running costs.
"We hope Maddiston Primary will become the benchmark for future school design and Falkirk Council will be able to develop our excellent working relationship with Graham Construction on future projects."
Torwood School will now close, with pupils transferring to the special units at Maddiston and Kinnaird Primaries.
