DENNIS Canavan, the high-profile president of Ramblers Association Scotland, is on the campaign trail again.

But this time the former Labour MP and Independent MSP for Falkirk West is not looking for votes but support for his challenge to the nation to become the fittest in the world!

Spurred by the news Glasgow will host the 2014 Commonwealth Games, Dennis wants us all to grab the chance to become fitter and healthier – and live longer – by taking regular exercise and enjoying the great outdoors.

During a political career that spanned over 30 years he never took a half-hearted approach to anything.

Typically, since his appointment as head of RAS last March, he has worked tirelessly promoting its role as a major force in protecting the outdoor environment and securing public access for all, most recently in the courts when a sheriff ruled against a millionaire businessman's bid to ban ramblers from his 70-acre estate near Kippen.

The verdict delighted Dennis who said: "The result sends a message to owners of big estates that people are entitled to walk on land provided they are acting responsibly in accordance with the Scottish Outdoor Access Code."

A quick look at the RAS website underlines the fact ramblers have plenty of routes and walks to choose from the length and breadth of Scotland. It is encouraging more and more Scots to use them that is Dennis's priority now.

He sees the lead up to the 2014 extravaganza as a golden opportunity for everyone to get into the starting blocks and sign up for healthy exercise.

''His vision by the time the games start six years from now is that everyone in Scotland will be walking at least 30 minutes a day.

He said: "Our right to roam legislation has demonstrated that Scotland leads the world providing the best rights of public access to our land and water. Let's build on this and raise the bar year by year so that by 2014 we have become the fittest nation on the planet.

"Physical activity is not just something for superstars and fitness fanatics. Some people may be put off because they believe it involves lots of painful exertion or spending lots of time and money, but this is not necessarily so. One of the healthiest and most enjoyable forms of exercise is walking.

''Even half an hour a day can make a big difference and it's cheaper than taking the car.

"In Scotland we are blessed with the finest countryside in the world and, thanks to the Scottish Parliament, all have a right of access to enjoy it. Walking with other people is also a very sociable activity.
Joining a ramblers group is a great idea if you're looking for company, and you'll feel the better for it!"
