Boxers take it on the chin as lights go out

BOXERS train for weeks to put someone's lights out — but Falkirk Council have kept a group of young pugilists in the dark for months.
Members of Zetland Amateur Boxing Club have had their training regime disrupted by faulty wiring at their pavilion base in Zetland Park, Grangemouth. The lights have literally been out at the club since February.
Jimmy Dunn, club secretary, said: "We're doing something good here, taking kids off the streets and giving them something worthwhile to do.
Youngsters can change their lives around with this. Why doesn't the council just get this done for us? It's been a long time."
Zetland Amateur Boxing Club has been using the pavilion for 15 years and the weekly wear and tear is starting to show in the building.
"The problem is the upkeep and the maintenance of the place," said Jimmy. "It's just not been done and now it needs completely rewired."
Jimmy said the council was scheduled to start work on the pavilion this week, which could be too late for coach John Buist to get the youngsters ready for their new season, which starts in September.
He added: "We've really got to start training now for the new season. We can't do that now and have to wait for the council's contractors to finish."
The pavilion featured in The Falkirk Herald "Get It Sorted" column in March after a parent got in touch and told us about the situation. At that time Tom Leighton, head of leisure at the council, said: "The rewiring work is being looked at as a matter of urgency and we look forward to a speedy return for the club to this important facility. "
This week a Falkirk Council spokesman said: "We have done our best to accommodate the boxing club, but the contractors need to completely rewire the building. Work, which will cost around £33,000, started on
July 14 and will not be finished until August 11. We have offered the club alternative accommodation but those premises do not have a boxing ring – the only place with such a facility is the pavilion."
