BOLLYWOOD is coming to town!
Big in Falkirk 2008 will see the area's most famous historic building, Callendar House, transformed as the backdrop for a colourful Indian spectacular.
In town this week to help out at the official launch of the ninth festival, which takes place on
the weekend of May 3 and 4, were Bollywood dancers Alison Alexandra Ho Chee and Cem Ahmet.
As the pair limbered up in Callendar Park, they put Falkirk's First Citizen through his paces ... and Provost Pat Reid was happy to learn a step or two.
Taking time out from his unexpected dance lesson, he said: "Big in Falkirk brings together a fabulous mix of street theatre, music and family entertainment, and always manages to impress the tens of thousands of visitors who attend each year.
"It has established itself as a truly international festival with artistes keen to come to Falkirk from across the world and present some amazing visual performances.
"This year will not disappoint the audiences and will continue to reinforce Big in Falkirk as an event that is inspirational and dynamic."
This year's National Street Arts Festival once again looks like being a crowd puller with something for everyone. From the tiny tots who will be captivated by nine feet tall Big Rory and his wayward mongrel Ochie to the 70s music fans who can relive their youth through the music of 10cc.
Nutkhut's Scottish premier of 'Bollywood Steps' will provide a glamorous and stunning production with all you would expect from a Hindi-inspired show: boy meets girl, their courtship, the inevitable wet sari scene and, of course, a fitting finale with their wedding.
The stylish production will have a cast of exciting young British dancers performing a variety of dance styles, everything from folk to classical, Bhangra to jazz, with touches of Busby Berkley's spectacular Hollywood productions. And with 140 different costumes, the colourful show is sure to attract hordes for its four performances.
Neil Butler, artistic director who has been involved in every Big in Falkirk, said: "We intend to make visits memorable, remarkable and totally entertaining. We have some brilliant Scottish entertainment from The Peatbog Faeries and Big Rory, world-class pop from 10cc and a wealth of other groups, environmental art from Scotland and South Asia, spectacular dance from Bollywood Steps and a world premier pyrotechnic theatre performance by firework masters the World Famous."
