A £1 MILLION early Christmas present has been announced for Falkirk people desperately in need of affordable housing.

The funding windfall from the Scottish Government will help Falkirk Council build 42 new homes – now the local authority just needs to find £1.35 million as its share of the final bill.

This cash cracker is part of a £24 million package which will help 20 councils across Scotland build 954 homes for rent.

With over 10,000 people still on Falkirk Council's housing waiting list, the new homes are long awaited.

Earlier this year, Falkirk received £1.3 million to support its new build programme. The Scottish Government then invited councils to bid for further cash and, since this was lodged at the end of September, councillors and housing officials have been anxiously awaiting news.
