Our dream family home

There’s lots to love about this individually-designed, four-bedroom villa in Shieldhill.

Whether the cherry wood kitchen cabinets catch your eye or the idea of a large solid wood staircase takes your fancy, this home also offers the space to accommodate a growing, active family.

The house was a self build 12 years, a second property project for this family.

Angela Nimmo, who lives there with her two daughters said: “It was built to create our dream family home.

“We already lived in Shieldhill and liked it, but wanted a bigger house.

“The space and size was very important.

“The bedrooms are all double-sized with fitted storage.

“We wanted to have fewer rooms and focus on having bigger rooms.”

A spacious feel is evident throughout this house.

The welcoming reception hall is large and bright, while the upstairs landing is roomy enough to accommodate a sofa with plenty of space left over.

Downstairs, you’ll find a lounge, a family room, a substantial kitchen, dining area and access to the decking area of the garden.

There’s also a handy WC downstairs and a door leading to the integral garage.

Angela said: “The kitchen is really nice and there’s plenty of cabinets and units.

“I really like that you can walk from the kitchen through the French doors and go straight out into the private back garden.

“Outside, you have a lovely view.

“It has a semi-rural feel because there’s a farm behind the garden, and over the garden fence is a stream.

“That land will never be developed or built on, so the garden offers a lot of privacy.”

The gardens are low maintenance, providing an ideal summer retreat, and the sweeping drive can easily take care of guests’ cars.

Throughout, Westbrook is in immaculate, walk-in condition, helped along by tasteful decor.

This family has found that there’s been little need to do anything to the property which is still relatively new.

But despite its age, it has impressive qualities which are more usually found in more traditional homes.

Angela added: “The size of the house and the spacious feel in the large bedrooms are a really nice feature.

“Another special feature is the large limestone fire surround in the lounge at the front of the house.

“A lot of people comment on the fireplace, but it’s built into the house so we certainly won’t be taking that with us.”
