Many people look back on their school days as the best of their lives, but there won’t be too many around today who were pupils at the old Muiravonside School in the Braes.

Local historian David Leask, who runs the Maddiston and Rumford Local History Group, sent in this picture taken in 1955.

The school was situated in Muiravonside village between Maddiston and Whitecross and was demolished during the sixties when Whitecross Primary was built.

He said: “Muiravonside School was the only school in the entire parish of Muiravonside.

“All the children from the parish had to walk, sometimes for a good few miles, to attend this school and even when the primary school in Maddiston opened those over the age of eight still faced the walk to this school in all kinds of weather.

“Nowadays of course you can hardly get near a school for cars.”
