Graveyards may not be the most common places for people to dwell, but local historians hoping to chart the history of their areas and people can find them fascinating.

The Maddiston and Rumford history group has recorded the inscriptions of every accessible gravestone in Muiravonside cemetery.

One of the more interesting graves belongs to the 18th Principal of Edinburgh University, George Husband Baird, who lived from 1761-1840.

Baird was educated at the Pariah School of Borrowstounness and Linlithgow Grammar School and was said to be more “plodding, persevering, and well-mannered than brilliant”.

However, due to his devotion to classwork after becoming a humanity student at the uni, he went on to be Principal at the age of 33 in 1793, holding the post for 47 years.
