Alex Ferguson’s first chairman was a Bainsford player

Spotting talent is something that comes from experience, but not everyone can claim to unearth a real gem who goes on to become a global footballing legend.

That was certainly the case for former East Stirlingshire FC chairman Willie Muirhead (pictured above, third from left, back row) in his school football days at Bainsford Primary School in the early 1930s.

The photo was sent in by John K Thomson of Bo’ness. His father John senior was in the same team (front row, right).

John said: “Willie Muirhead was the man who gave a guy by the name of Alexander Ferguson his first job in football management for the Shire in 1974.

“Sadly both my father and Willie are no longer with us as, I suspect, are most of those in the photo. If they are still alive today the boys will now be in their nineties.”
