Councilllor Joe Lemetti celebrates his 65th birthday with Alex Totten

A candidate in next week’s council elections is directing his campaign from a hospital bed.

Joe Lemetti has vowed to continue his fight to be re-elected as a councillor for Falkirk South – despite losing a leg.

The well-known Camelon chip shop owner underwent life-saving surgery last week when surgeons amputated his right leg from below the knee.

His problems began last November after he injured his feet while on a planning committee site visit.

He had already been diagnosed as a diabetic and, as is common with this condition, his damaged toes failed to heal.

Surgeons eventually removed three of his toes but last week the decision was taken the major amputation was needed.

Yesterday (Wednesday) he said: “I want everyone to know it’s a privilege to have been their councillor for the last five years. I’m determined to be re-elected.”

A life-long Falkirk fan, Joe was visited by club stalwart Alex Totten yesterday (Wednesday) who presented him with a signed first team strip.

He is seeking to be returned as an independent councillor after not being reselected by Labour to contest the four-seat ward.
