Grangemouth home to cancer killing drug

Cancer wonder drugs are being produced in a Grangemouth factory.

Pharmaceutical company Piramal are making the new class of drugs called ADCs.

They reportedly hunt out and specifically kill cancerous cells – leading to them being labelled ‘smart bombs’.

The drugs have recently been approved for use in the USA and will soon be reviewed for use in Europe.

Deputy First Minister Nicola Sturgeon was at the Earls Road plant on Monday to official open the new manufacturing suite. It was upgraded with the help of £145,000 Scottish Enterprise funding.

She said the visit was a welcome opportunity to see at first hand the manufacture of the only licensed cancer drugs of this kind in the world.

The Deputy First Minister added: “These new drugs will be reviewed for European licence soon – providing an opportunity for them to be considered for use in the NHS in Scotland ahead of the rest of the UK.

“Investment in health research and development has the potential to turn cutting-edge research into real health benefits.”

The company employs around 85 people, with the new suite creating 15 jobs.

Terry Cooke, Piramal Grangemouth’s site lead, said: “We’re very excited about this new class of anti-cancer medicine that we manufacture here and we all take great pride in the fact that they are so effective in saving peoples’ lives.”
