Computer game teaches valuable life lessons

Pupils will learn life skills

Pupils across Falkirk district will benefit from a computer game after a successful trial at Larbert High.

‘GONE’ resource uses a series of video clips and computer based activities to explore the pressures and choices faced by young people including friendships, sexual health, alcohol use and internet safety.

The program follows the lives of four young teenagers and studies the choices they make from primary seven as they move through high school to S3 .

Pamela Vannan, senior health promotion officer for NHS Forth Valley, said: “The program is designed to be as interactive as possible, with pupils completing tasks in a computer game format.

“It allows pupils to discuss the issues surrounding the decisions that the characters make and then debate which character will be ‘gone’ from school as a result of their choices.”

The program was developed for pupils in S2 and was piloted at Larbert as well as Alloa Academy and Bannockburn High, where both teachers and pupils praised the resource for highlighting the key issues that they may experience during their time at school.

Training for the programme will be given to school staff over the next month.
