There’s always a lot of fuss when a new restaurant arrives, especially one in such a prominent building in the town centre.
Manor Street’s Amodo Mio has been busy since its doors first opened a few months before Christmas, and, in the early days, it can be difficult to discover whether or not patrons are going along for the quality of the cuisine or just out of sheer curiosity.
During my weekday, lunchtime visit last week, I found the Italian eaterie busy and filled with people who had clearly visited before.
There was a relaxed atmosphere without being dull or stuffy, the decor was fresh and welcoming, and the staff pleasant and attentive.
But this is a restaurant that prides itself on family values and traditional food; owners Carolina and Giovanni Pia are the children of the proprietors of Bar Aldo’s in Alloa.
The menu is creative and well laid out with just enough details on each dish.
It’s packed with personal and colourful photography, and opens with a dedication from the children to their parents on teaching them the value of hard work and its role in success.
But you only have to look at the restaurant’s name, which translates as ‘My Way’, to understand that, while learning from their well-known parents, Carolina and Giovanni are keen to branch out and go it alone in their new Falkirk venture.
To start, I chose the insalata caprese (mozzarella and tomatoes served with basil and balsamic) while my companion opted for melon with Parma ham.
Both dishes were a great size, fresh and tasty.
Choosing two mains off the al-a-carte menu was a difficult decision, with numerous dishes appealing due to the imagery conjured up by the menu.
In saying that, many of the fellow diners were enjoying dishes for the lunchtime special menu, coming in at just £7.95 for two courses.
In the end, I opted for mixed seafood cooked with garlic and white wine and served with spaghetti.
It was lovely and satisfying, with the large and juicy prawns and tasty mussels a real plus point.
My friend enjoyed the stelle al salmone e anet – pasta stuffed with salmon and dill – served with creamy sauce and rocket leaves.
She commented that the dish, which looked modest in size when it arrived, was tremendously filling while the flavour was pleasantly subtle.
It seems Amodo Mio has succeeded in its aim of bringing a range of Italian dishes to town, pleasing both young and old with a selection of breads, pasta, pizza, and meats.
And, like most things in this restaurant, it’s all very well done.
As for me, I’m in the dog house at the office for not bringing back a verdict on the homemade tiramisu or the speciality coffee, but I look forward to putting this wrong right.
Unlike Frank Sinatra’s famous song, I didn’t have any regrets doing lunch ‘My Way’.
