Awards are coming thick and fast for a young “ambassador” who has worked his way up to the top seven in Europe for table tennis.

Wallacestone wonder Christopher Wheeler has picked up a new award from Braes High School for his prowess in the world of ping pong.

The 12-year-old has just returned from a prestigious training camp in Gdansk, Poland, after being chosen as one of the top 12 talents on the continent and finished seventh overall.

Christopher, who has won both the Scottish Under-13 National Championships and the British National Primary School Championships twice, was also recognised by his school peers for his success by choosing him as the first recipient of the Braes Award (BrAw) for the ‘success’ category.

Ambitious Christopher, who started playing the sport when he was just six, has his sights on world domination in the future.

He said: “The training camp in Poland was a really good experience for me and I’d like to play table tennis professionally one day. We have a table at home that I train on.

“I started playing with my dad and my brother Alexander when I was six. They are good players too, but I think I’m getting better than them now.”

The BrAw award was designed by current S5 pupils as an opportunity to “Be Part Of” the school and the local community with four categories: Health and wellbeing; Contributions; National and international awareness; and Success.

Braes head teacher Helen McCulloch said: “We are delighted at Christopher’s outstanding success in table tennis, which gained him an invite to join the top 12 players of his age at the training camp in Poland.

“In addition to his sporting success, Christopher works hard at school to ensure success in learning as well as in table tennis.

“He is an excellent pupil and ambassador for the school and we look forward to following his progress.”
