Big deal for four queens

Bog Road Gala Day, 1952.

Bog Road Gala Day, 1952.

The girls from St Francis School were lucky in 1952 - four of them had their names pulled out of hats to be gala queens.

Camelon’s Mariners Day had Irene Davie, nee Hendrie, Grangemouth had Margaret Cannon, Bridget McGeever was queen at Bruce Street and Eleanor Monteith, nee Kane for Bog Road.

Mrs Monteith, who now lives in Camelon, said: “It was funny how it worked out, I don’t remember any other year where four gala queens came from St Francis but there were four in 1952.

“I was actually picked out on my 14th birthday, on May 27, for the gala day the following month. It didn’t leave a lot of time to get things organised but luckily my next door neighbour was a dress maker and she made my outfit. I loved that dress and held on to it for a long time.”

The weather was temperamental that day and so Mrs Monteith was crowned in a ceremony in Falkirk Ice Rink, instead of Victoria Park where the crownings usually were held.

“It was a great day - even if it did have to be held inside. My sister Margaret had been picked as lady in waiting and so it was a big day for the family.

“After me there were no gala days for a long time. I’m not sure when they reinstated them but I was asked back to crown the new queen and I was married with a family by that time.”
