Moonwalk Edinburgh 2011 raised thousands for charity

Moonwalk Edinburgh 2011 raised thousands for charity

Moonwalkers have just over two weeks to flex their muscles in preparation for this year’s event.

Those planning to tackle all 26.2 miles of the Full Moon in Edinburgh on June 9 should be aiming to do a 20-mile walk within the next seven days, while those doing a Half Moon (13.1 miles) should do 10 miles.

Organised by cancer charity Walk the Walk, over £75 million has been raised by 245,000 walkers since its first event in 1996.

This year, it has pledged to give £3 million to Maggie’s to build a Caring Cancer Centre in the grounds of Forth Valley Royal Hospital in Larbert.

The facility will complement the cancer services provided in the acute hospital by offering support and information for cancer sufferers and their families in non-clinical surroundings.

Nina Barough, who founded Walk the Walk after being diagnosed with breast cancer, said over £8.2 million had been raised in 2011 and they hoped to top that figure this year.

She said: “Whilst the ethos of Walk the Walk has always been to support large projects and to help them to reach completion more quickly, we now have an allocation of funding for small community projects throughout the UK.

“Walk the Walk is founded on everybody doing their bit, no matter how small or large whether you are walking for us or volunteering, together we are making a big difference to the lives of those with breast cancer and to our future health.”

The Falkirk Herald will be leading one of the teams taking part in this year’s event.
