Let’s pull together for Maggie’s Centre
The MoonWalk is a great experience for all involved
Sunny days and unseasonal temperatures have brought people out of doors.
So why not put the extra daylight hours to good use and train for the 2012 Edinburgh MoonWalk.
There’s still time to join The Falkirk Herald team for the event on Saturday, June 9, when thousands of women – and men – will take to the streets of the capital.
And not content with power walking through the streets, they’ll be sporting brightly coloured bras to highlight the work of organising charity Walk the Walk to raise funds and awareness for breast cancer charities.
This year’s Scottish MoonWalk is the seventh to take place and will have particular significance for people living in Forth Valley.
Walk the Walk has pledged £3 million to provide a Maggie’s Centre which will be built in the grounds of Forth Valley Royal Hospital at Larbert.
The brainchild of Maggie Keswick Jencks, the centres provide a non-clinical facility providing much-needed help and support to cancer sufferers and their families.
Although Maggie died from her cancer in 1995, she remains the inspiration for the 16 centres bearing her name which are now open or in development.
Urging people to join The Falkirk Herald team for the walk, editor Colin Hume said: “The MoonWalk is a fantastic opportunity to raise money and awareness for a very worthwhile cause. The added bonus is that it is contributing the funding for a Maggie’s Centre which will provide a valuable facility for cancer sufferers for people in the Falkirk area and throughout Forth Valley.
“I would encourage as many people as possible to sign up and join us in June for this challenging but exciting event.”
Nina Barough, founder of Walk the Walk, said: “Although the MoonWalk takes place in Edinburgh, the charity is clear that the funds raised are to be used to benefit and make a difference to cancer patients right across Scotland.
“As this area does not currently have a Maggie’s facility and the wonderful service they provide, it is very special that Walk the Walk has been able to make a contribution to the community in this way.”
