Excitement over Maggie’s latest

News that a Maggies’s Centre will be built at Larbert to support cancer sufferers and their families has been widely welcomed.
The innovative healthcare facility will provide practical advice and emotional help for the thousands of people across Forth Valley who are affected by the disease.
Thanks to a £3 million grant from charity Walk the Walk, the bill for the development and initial running costs has already been met.
This will be the second Maggie’s Centre to be funded by them, last October one opened at Gartnavel Hospital in Glasgow.
The cash will come from The MoonWalk Edinburgh, an unconventional event when women – and men, walk through the streets of the capital wearing brightly coloured bras, and keeping the charity’s promise that all money raised in Scotland will be spent in this country.
Welcoming last week’s announcement, Michael Matheson, Falkirk West MSP and Public Health Minister, said: “It will be great to have a Maggie’s Centre in the area and securing funding is a significant step forward to making it become a reality.
“I recently discussed with NHS Forth Valley the proposal for the centre and they have assured me that they will be working with Maggie’s Centre to assist in taking forward their plans.”
The new facility will be in the grounds of Forth Valley Royal Hospital and the health authority has always maintained the extensive parkland would be ideal for a complementary medical campus.
Professor Fiona Mackenzie, NHS Forth Valley’s chief executive, said: “This will be a wonderful new facility for the many hundreds of people from across Forth Valley who are treated for cancer every year.
“Maggie’s Caring Cancer Centres are internationally renowned for the excellent support and advice they provide to patients and their families, and we look forward to working with them on this exciting new development.”
As a ‘thank you’ for providing the cash for the project, The Falkirk Herald is urging readers to join them by signing up for this year’s MoonWalk Edinburgh on June 9.
The target is 100 walkers, making it the largest-ever team to take part, and already people are answering the call.
