Sharon Taylor gears up for Ben Nevis

Sharon Taylor gears up for Ben Nevis

A Falkirk woman who shed 10 stone in two years plans to mark her new lease of life by scaling Ben Nevis.

Sharon Taylor (44), of Viewforth Drive, Laurieston, weighed as much as 23 stone before she took it upon herself to lose the fat through a combination of diet and exercise.

“I would lose two or three stone then put it back on,” she admitted. “I don’t know what made me decide to do it one day and stick to it.”

Cheered on by husband Ian (39) and friend and personal trainer Christine Wilson, she kept the weight off and is now fitter than she has ever been.

The new-look Sharon, who works at Grangemouth-based Loretto Care, then noticed an article in The Falkirk Herald about her old pal Grant Williamson, who was planning to scale Ben Nevis one last time in August despite his dodgy knees.

She said: “I used to live next door to Grant when were kids and he was pals with my brother.

''I started to take the mickey out of him about his knees and the climb and he turned around and said, 'Well, why don’t you come with me?'

“I’ve always wanted to do something like this since I lost the weight, so I agreed.”

To make the climb up Britain’s tallest mountain even more worthwhile, Sharon plans to raise as much cash as possible for Macmillan Cancer Support.

“My mum has now been clear of breast cancer for 10 years and the Macmillan nurses were great with her.'' she explained.

Sharon is now working with Christine, who teaches Zumba, Boot Camp and Bokwa classes, on a fitness plan specifically designed to get her ready for Ben Nevis.

She said: “If I can do this then hopefully other people will be motivated to lose weight and do the same, because I wouldn’t have been able to do it two years ago.”
