A woman who gave up her spare time to work for Barnardo’s for over 20 years has had her commitment to helping others recognised.

Isobel Anderson (70), from Oswald Avenue, Grangemouth, received her Diamond Champion award from the charity recently, but says she sees volunteering work as reward enough.

“I enjoyed working with the children – my family’s all grown up now. The children who come to us need help and we see the difference we make to them.

“It’s a marvellous thing when mums come and say thank you to us.”

Isobel’s association with Barnardo’s stretches back two decades and began when she took early retirement.

She said: “I thought, I’ve had a good life and now I want to give something back.”

Over the years Isobel has been involved in creche work – enabling parents to attend vital health or education meetings – participated in nurture groups and various activity groups.

Fran Anderson, Barnardo’s volunteering co-ordinator, said: “She quite humbly gets on with her volunteering work and does not realise the exceptional contribution she has made over the past 20 years, helping Barnardo’s to turn around the lives of hundreds of vulnerable children, young people and their families.”

Now a Diamond Champion, Isobel is more committed than ever to the cause.

“I love working with Barnardo’s and will never stop,” she said.
