A former councillor and his wife have celebrated their diamond wedding.
Danny and Marion Mailer marked the milestone last Thursday with a family gathering.
They were joined by daughters Ann and Marion, their husbands Eric Low and George Stewart, four grandchildren – Fraser, Christina, Ashley and Steven – and great grandaughter Makynzie.
Danny was born in Auchterarder in 1930 but moved to Falkirk with his parents when he was just six weeks old.
As a teenager he met wife-to-be Marion Tait at the popular Mutual Dance Hall in her home town of Airdrie in 1949.
The happy couple were married on December 20, 1952, after he had completed his National Service with the Parachute Regiment.
A convention taking place that day meant they could not hold the event in Airdrie West Parish Church, but bride and groom welcomed family and friends to the service of marriage and reception in the town’s Carlisle Tea Rooms in instead.
After a honeymoon in Leven the newlyweds set up home firstly in rented rooms in Grange Drive and then Kennard Street.
They later moved in to their first house in Corporation Street where Ann was born and then Kerse Gardens where Marion and their son John, who sadly died at the age of five weeks, were welcome additions to the family.
In later years Danny and Marion lived in Westfield Street before moving to their current home in Eastburn Tower.
Danny served with the Parachute Regiment for 18 years, both as a regular and member of the TA, and saw service with the 3rd Battalion, 15 Para and 300 Sqaudron Para Engineers in Cyprus, Egypt and Aden.
He was an upholsterer and carpet fitter with Crawford & Thomson in Falkirk but also worked at the ICI and BXL in Grangemouth.
In 1977 Danny, now 82, was elected to the then Falkirk District Council as Labour member for the former Ladysmill Ward and was returned again as an Independent Labour councillor in 1988.
He retired from local politics and his job as a security guard at the Howgate Centre in 1992 due to ill health, but, up until May 2010, both he and Marion (81) were actively involved with both the Bog Road and High Flats tenants’ associations.
