Smiling his way to some tasty freebies

Good manners are important .... and, if coupled with a cheeky smile, can get you a long way.

I’m just back from a week’s holiday in Loch Rannoch accompanied by my wife and son, who turns four on Sunday.

Luckily we were blessed with excellent weather, which meant plenty of long walks, usually ending up at a tearoom for an afternoon cuppa and cake thus undoing all our good work).

And that’s where Calum (pictured) came into his own.

His abundant use of ‘please’, ‘thank you’, ‘excuse me’ and ‘pardon me’ - even if the offending sound emanated from an adjoining table – fair tickled our hosts.

In one cafe, much to the envy of his father, he emerged with a free empire biscuit after impressing with his manners.

And on one of our regular visits to Treats – an establishment I’d certainly recommend if you’re ever up that way – he left with a lollipop after devouring a scone and thanking the waiter in fine style.

Much as I tried to replicate Calum’s charm, I was never quite able to pull it off.

In fact, the only thing I left with was a red face after being called back into a cafe to be presented with the cap I’d left on a chair.
