From floods to fires via a return to the ’80s
Colin Hume.
Those of you who have dipped into this column before may be aware that, after my last long weekend away, I returned to a flooded house.
It was therefore with some trepidation that the Hume clan headed home after our most recent mini excursion.
Our worst fears looked like being realised when we turned into our street to find a fire engine, complete with blue flashing lights, parked outside.
Luckily - for us anyway - it was our neighbours’ dodgy dishwasher that had Falkirk’s finest in attendance.
Until this piece of excitement, the most noteworthy aspect of our trip home had been an attendant offering to fill up our car for us when we pulled into the Old Inns service station at Castlecary.
I think the last time that happened was when I was a school kid in the back of my mum’s car.
But maybe this is all part of a move back to simpler times.
A few weeks ago, during a trip to Edinburgh, I was again transported back in time when I was offered the chance to withdraw £5 at a cash machine.
I took it for novelty’s sake ... but soon discovered it didn’t go very far!
