An 18-strong detachment of Royal Engineers, under the command of Lieutenant Victoria Brumpton, came to the aid of Plean's William Simpson Home – helping the long-established residential care facility move ahead with their ambitious plans to improve and update the building and surrounding area.

On learning the Royal Engineers sometimes carry out civilian work to help them with their military training, officials at the home decided to get in touch with them to see if they would build a new access road and carry out various other works at the Main Street, Old Plean premises.

Home manager Jean Lyons said: "We got in touch with Major James Christie of the Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Families Association (SSAFA) and he contacted the Royal Engineers, who agreed to come in and look at our proposals.
"It's been a delight to have the Royal Engineers here – I have nothing but the utmost respect for their craftsmanship and energy. They worked in all weathers, from early in the morning to late at night. They are a great team of people and a credit to the country."
